Kurigram Govt. College



Kurigram Government College located at the centre of Kurigram District Headquarters, is the only honors college in the district. It is also one of the famous colleges of northern Bangladesh. It offers HSC, three-year Bachelor and four-year Honors courses. The college is affiliated to the National University. Several thousand students study here. The college has two academic buildings and two hostels, one for male and the other for female students.


History

Kurigram College was established in 1961 by some local elite and educated people with the help of the then Mahkuma (District) commissioner, Salim Uddin Ahmed. Ex-minister and deputy speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Riaz Uddin Ahmed Bhola Mia, Ahmad Ali Boksi, advocate Aman Ullah and other prominent persons were involved in the establishment process of the college.

The academic activities with the faculty of Arts and Commerce started in Kurigram High School and, after three or four months, it was shifted to its present location. Initially, Mr. Pranballav Kranjai managed the administration and high school teacher Khitindranath Roy worked as part-time lecturer. Prof. Kausar Ali, popularly known as K. Ali, joined the college as principal. On March 1, 1980 the college was nationalized and named Kurigram Government College. Eminent educationist Prof. Kazi Rafikul Haque was appointed principal immediately after nationalization.



Location

Kurigram Govt. College is in the heart of Kurigram district town. The college is easily accessible since the Kurigram-Chilmari (KC) Road runs by the college. It is surrounded by such important buildings as District Administrator's Office, District Judge Court, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Office, Kurigram Govt. Boys High School, Kurigram Govt. Girls High School, District Health Complex, District Auditorium and the Stadium. The Dharla River and the Dharla Bridge are only 1 km from the campus. All these important amenities attract the students to this institution.

Administration and teaching staff

This is one of the leading colleges in northern Bangladesh in terms of academic excellence and professional teaching. The college has about 50 competent teachers from BCS General Education Cadre. Prof. Sabiha Khatun is the principal of this college while Md. Tofayel Hossain is the vice principal. The college has made a lot of progress ever since its nationalization. Creation of new departments, erection of the largest Shahid Minar, establishment of the hostel for female students, beautification of the college with tree plantation and botanical garden, are some of the monumental accomplishments. Nowadays, the teachers and students are showing the best performance in the region.

History of war of liberation

History of the War of Liberation In 1971, the freedom fighters attacked a military convoy at a place near the Chaumohani Bazar of Ulipur upazila. On 20 May the Pak army brutally killed 30 persons of Chilmari upazila at a place on the bank of the Brahmaputra. On 11 November, 69 members of the allied forceds including Major Ram Singh and 5 freedom fighters were killed in a battle with the Pak army in Bhurungamari upazila of the district. On 13 November the Pak army brutally killed nearly 700 innocent people at Hatia in Ulipur upazila. Besides, an encounter was held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army on 19 November near the Roiganj bridge of Nageshwari upazila in which three freedom fighters including Lt. Col. Samad were killed. Another battle was held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army on 20 November in Bhurungamari upazila in which more than 100 Pak soldiers were killed and so were a number of freedom fighters including Lt. Abu Saiyed Mohammad Ashfaqus Samad (Bir Uttam). The Pak army killed 62 persons of Nilur Khamar mouza under Santoshpur union of Nageshwari upazila. Besides, they also burned to death 35 persons at a place on the north west side of the Nageshwari Health Complex.

About Kurigram

Kurigram district is located in the west- northern borderline of Bangladesh. It is one of the ancient regions of primitive civilization. The first appearance of primitive human was in the Teesta and Brahmaputra Vally of the region. The combined bloodstream of Black, Astrict and Dravidian –Mongolian made its ancient civilization which is universally agreed non Arjo. Quit-India Movement, Tebhaga Movement, Satyagraha Movement etc are the remarkable chapters of the region. During the East India company period, Kurigram subdivision was formed in 22 April 1875. The previous name of the region was Kuriganj. Sir William Hunter mentioned the region as “Kuriganj” in his writing named Gazetteer of the Rangpur District. There is no enough evidence about the naming of Kurigram. But some Historians think that the word Kurigram came from “Kuri” (means 20 pieces). During the War of Liberation- Raumari, Rajibpur (except Kodalkati union) and Phulbari upazilas were beyond the reach of the Pakistani army. Many direct encounters between the Freedom Fighters and the Pakistani army were held in this region in which about 100 Freedom Fighters were martyred. After the liberation of Bangladesh, Kurigram started its journey as a district on 23 January 1984. The Geo position of the district is between 20˚03’ to 26˚03’ North latitudes and between 89˚27’ to 89˚47’ east longitude.


Language

Most people speak Bengali in Rangpurian tone but understand the formal Bengali. People from town can speak in proper Bengali when many people can speak in English as well. People live in the city or town know better English than the village area.






Food

Rice and various curry are the common foods of this district like other parts of Bangladesh. Various kinds of fresh water fishes are widely eaten by the peoples of this district rather than meat. These fishes are usually collected from the several rivers flowing through the heart of the district. "Korti", a white-wide-thin small fish with multiple number of bones are vary popular in this district, like "Ilish" (Hilsha ilisha) in the every parts of Bangladesh. In addition to this, peoples are usually celebrate their various seasons by various kinds of foods. In winter, you can enjoy the taste of sweet natural juice from the date tree.
